Lorraine May Jessep was born Tuesday, 19 May 1946 in Sydney, New South Wales.
Lorraine was the first child of Beryl and Donald Jessep. Her father was ex RAAF and one of a line of Military service in his Family. Lorraine’s Mother was the daughter of a school headmaster so it was no surprise that Lorraine was an A student and had a talent in writing and organising. She joined the Girl Guides and was involved in many School events.
Lorraine’s first job was at the Brisbane Weather Bureau as a punch card operator.
Maybe it was the Military background of her father or the Band Music her mother played that provided the influence for Lorraine to be involved in the Australian Marching Girls movement. Whatever the influence, rest assured Lorraine was determined to be the best as she did for anything she was involved in. She worked her way to become the Leader and she led her team to be state champions and then to compete in the National Titles.
The Marching Girl association was a strong passion, apart from pets and changing her hair colour, and this continued on in the early years where Lorraine became an instructor. One of her teams, the Cavalaires (midgets), did very well in the local and state championships. Not content to be on one side Lorraine also marched and in 1982 at the Commonwealth Games both Lorraine and her daughter marched in a display at the Opening.
Family was important to Lorraine and her Children meant everything to her. She was blessed with 4 children but sadly her first Deborrah Lorraine was only with her a short time. They are together again.
Lorraine was total support for her children and whether it was winning State championships in Marching or the Australian Youth Ballet she was there behind them providing her full support.
As her family grew up and started families of her own, Lorraine was able to focus on an old passion, no not hair colour but breeding Dogs. She was in love with many breeds over the years from Shetland Sheepdogs to Bernese Mountain dogs. Lorraine was involved in many clubs and was trained as an instructor in Obedience which led to her being able to understand the “Alert” traits dogs show where they have bonded to their owner.
Lorraine’s pride and joy was her Japanese Chin who were not only Australian Champions but Lorraine was also instrumental in Australia’s first fully accredited Hypo Alert Dog. As a suffering Diabetic, Lorraine understood the importance of being alerted to sugar swings and helped a number families by placing a puppy with the Family and training them together. This innovative approach worked well and had Lorraine travel to Europe and Perth to place puppies.
Lorraine was the founder of HALO Hypo Alert Oz Service Dogs inc so she left a legacy and changed the outlook for a number Families who now have, as Lorraine put it, “A Guardian Angel” to help manage their Children’s Diabetes.
