Alfred was born in Sydney on Wednesday, September 30, 1868. The Sydney Morning Herald was twopence.
Alfred Married Marion Frances Stanhope on Wednesday, 14 January 1891 and started a family soon after.
They had 6 children before Alfred went off to war, 2 Boys and 4 Girls.
On the 15 March 1915 Alfred enlisted in the AIF at the Sydney intake centre. He was assigned the Service
number 1785. On the 19th June 1915 his regiment embarked for active service abroad.
They left Australia on the HMAT A61 "Kanowna" and later proceeded to Gallipoli. Alfred was promoted to
Sergeant in September of that year. He was later given his commission to Lieutenant on the 5th March 1916.
Alfred was mentioned in dispatches and on the 3rd June 1919 he was awarded the Member of the British
Empire (MBE) for Conspicuous services rendered whilst serving with the Australian Imperial Force.
His Son Alfred Donald is noted to be waring his Fathers MBE.
