Charles, the third eldest son of Thomas and Jane (Cooper) was born in Fincham, Norfolk and baptised on 25 Feb 1838, at St Martins. Thomas and Jane had moved around the area but looked like they were settling down in Gooderstone where Thomas was the licensee of "Jessep's Beer House". By March 1851 Charles was working as an agricultural labourer most likely for his father as the beer house had an attached farm of 32 acres.

Charles' mother Jane, died on the 21 July 1851 in Norfolk while giving birth to Henry who also died. His father remarried Elizabeth English in Gooderstone on 5th October 1853. A year later Charles with his siblings, father and step mother left Norfolk forever as they sailed away to a new life in the colonies. They were bound for Hobart Town on the Caroline Middleton and it arrived on 29 Sep 1854. On the voyage to Hobart Town, Charles' father lost his battle with Scarlet Fever just 9 days after leaving port. Now he was alone except for his younger siblings and his step mother.
Charles was able to leave the ship and work for Mr Jonah Redman who paid £3- to the government as part of the Indenture system. The system was setup to pay the passage money for new emigrants and in return they agreed to remain and work in the colony for 4 years. If they leave before that time then the full passage money was to be repaid.
Charles remained in Van Diemen's Land working until around 1861. This was possibly for support of his younger siblings, who had been placed in the Queen’s orphanage. On the 18 September 1862 Charles married Amelia Koch at the Lutheran church in east Melbourne. Charles and Amelia were living near his sister Elizabeth Gasson in Dunolly's creek. Charles was a farmer and shepherd and gold prospecting was obviously not for him. He left Amelia with his sister and set off for New Zealand. Charles arrived in Dunedin about the 10th March 1863. This area was much more like his home in Norfolk. Once he was settled, Charles would send money for his wife Amelia to join him. In November Amelia received the money and finally joined him in Dunedin in January 1864.
Charles and Amelia were divorced in Nov 1869. Charles stated in court he had no issue with Amelia. On the 18 October 1870 Charles and Sarah West were married in Dunedin, New Zealand. Sarah died giving birth to Alice Sarah on 8 Oct 1871 and sadly she also passed away.
Charles remarried Bridget Athy on the 23 July 1873.
