OBITUARY MR. JAMES JEESSP. Gippsland Times Thursday 14 Jun 1934:
The death occurred, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R. J. Mawley. "Fosterton," Sale, on Tuesday last of Mr. James Jessep. The late Mr Jessep was a well known and highly respected resident of the Maffra district, and was, 74 years of age. He was born at Port Albert in the year 1860, and at the age of 6 years journeyed to the Newry district will his parents by bullock wagon. The roads in those days were but bush tracks, and among other incidents in an eventful journey the wagon was bogged while fording the Macalister river. Mr. Jessep's father took up a selection at Newry which is still in the hands of descendants of the family. About fifty years ago, the late Mr. Jessep struck out on his own account and purchased an area of 14 acres in the township of Tinamba. Portion of this block is now occupied by the Tinamba school. He gradually extended his holding and later purchased the "Roonsleigh" property on the opposite side of the Maffra-Tinamba road. He specialised in dairying pursuits among other activities, and was noted for his high-class stock. In his earlier years he exhibited Berkshire pigs at district shows with marked success, and also bred remounts for the Indian market. A good rough rider, he was recognised as a fine horseman in his youth. Failing health caused his retirement from active work about 20 years ago. His wife predeceased him less than twelve months ago. He is survived by a family of four sons: Arthur (Tinamba), Alex (principal of the Burnley Horticultural College), Clyde '(Dimboola), Hugh (Camberwell): and three daughters: Annie (Tinamba). Agnes (Mrs. Mawley, Sale). And Margaret (Mrs. Eastoe, Apollo Bay). To the members of the family the deepest sympathy will be extended in their hour of sorrow.
