Alister enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 25 April 1916 and in November of that same year was sent to France. He was attached to the Australian Army Medical Corps. On the 28 December 1916 Alister was wounded and taken to field hospital. He recovered and rejoined the action 2 Jan 1917. As the AIF was involved in heavy fighting in France where Alister was wounded a second time 23 April 1917. This time sent to England and later sent home.
