NEWRY Two Long-Standing Families Farewelled- Gippsland Times 17 Nov 1941

There was a large attendance of Newry and district people at the farewell social tendered to Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Jessep. (who must not be confused with Mr. Arthur Jessep, of Tinamba) and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Jessep, and their families, at the Newry Hall on Tuesday night last. The evening was spent dancing and playing euchre, while vocal items were delightfully rendered by Mrs. H. Hewitt and Mrs. L. McLachlan. Mrs. Hewitt chose "Smilin' Thru," and "A Perfect Day" for her numbers, and Mrs. McLachlan's choice was "Home on the Range".
During an interval Mr. H. Trew, as chairman, introduced the following speakers, and took the opportunity of wishing the Jessep families good luck in the future. Mr. And Mrs. J. Jessep are taking up residence in Maffra, and Mr. And Mrs. A. Jessep will reside at Traralgon.
Mr. C. Rawlings, who said that he had been in the Newry district since he was three months old, added that for as long as he could remember there had been the Jessep family in Newry. He felt sure that the people would very much miss both families, who were always generous in their help with any public functions, and organisations. He wished them the best of health and good fortune in their new homes.
Rev. Lovegrove, of Heyfield, spoke as minister of St. Clement's Church of England, Newry, and said Mr. And Mrs. J. Jessep and family were always a great help and sincere in their attentions to the church. It was always a great credit to the parents when people lived such good lives, and it showed that this was being passed on to the children in the case of the family of Mr. And Mrs. Jessep. He wished them God speed and expressed the hope that their future would be happy in every way.
Mr. J. H. Sturtz, as head teacher of the Newry State School, spoke of the wonderful help the two Jessep families had been to the Newry School and Young Farmers' Club. They were always ready to assist, and he felt sure the greatest tribute he could pay was to mention the fact that as teacher of Una and Marshall (Bill) he could find no faults. He knew that Newry would be the poorer for the departure of these families, and he wished them-those present and those' who are doing their duty in other parts of the world (Bob, elder son of Mr. And Mrs. J. Jessep, is a member of the A.I.F. Overseas, and Jack, elder son of Mr. And Mrs. A. Jessep, is on the ground staff, R.A.A.F., Ascot Vale)-the very best of luck in the future.
Mr. D. Weir, junr., on behalf of the Hall Committee and Newry branch of the A.N.A., both of which Mr. J. Jessep was a member, said that the loss of these two families was a severe one to the district, and the committee, particularly, would miss the services of Mr. J. Jessep. As secretary of the A.N.A. He had done outstanding work. He wished both good fortune in their new spheres.
Cr. D. R. Manson also spoke of the high qualities of the Jesseps and said that the loss was a great one to Newry, but as many people who left Newry duly, returned, he hoped the same would apply in this case. The two Mrs. Jesseps had always been a wonderful help to the "ladies in the kitchen" and would be greatly missed, as would, of course, the menfolk in their many duties rendered to public bodies. He wished them a very happy and prosperous life in their new homes, and on behalf of the people of Newry and district presented each lady with a beautiful English china tea-set.
"For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" was then sung.
Mr.-J. Jessep thanked the various speakers for their remarks and said that they really did not need a fare well, as they were only going to a "suburb" of Newry and hoped to patronise as many functions as could be managed. He thanked every one for their kind thoughts and good wishes.
Mr. A. Jessep also thanked the various speakers for their kind remarks, and on behalf of Mrs. Jessep, their family' and himself, expressed thanks for the gift and expressions of goodwill.
Just prior to the speeches Marie Teychenne presented each of the two Mrs. Jesseps with a delightful posy, made of rosebuds, primulas, sweet peas and carnations. These were made by Mrs. L. McLachlan and were much admired by everyone.
The music was supplied by the Newry Sunbeam Orchestra, and the euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Crozier (Heyfleld) and two gents who divided.
